Mandala Painting – Menla Thangka

This mandala painting also called thangka has been handpainted in Bhutan by Chador Tenzin, winner of the seal of quality award 2012.Thangka painting is an ancient type of Tibetan art, which has been preserved in the Himalayan region for two thousand years. Thangka is a Tibetan word, which means ‘recorded message’. Tibetan Thangka is a scroll-like painting which can be explored like a map through visual symbols and colours. Each detail is intricate and has a deep symbolic meaning, referring to parts of the Buddhist philosophy. Hence, Buddhist Thangka is meant to combine fine art with spirituality, to create a captivating art piece filled with philosophical meaning.This piece is a “Menla” mandala, commonly called the Buddha of medicine. Made with twelve (12) great bodhisattva vows, the mandala of medicine Buddha has three levels: external, internal and absolute. A lot of Buddhism practice is needed in order to realize (pass) these three levels. The external level is accomplished with devotion and offering to the Medicine Buddha and the practice of medicine. The inner level is reached with the tantric practice of identifying oneself with the medicine Buddha and one’s world with the energies of the pure medicinal land.
