Traditional Bamboo Hat

This traditional bamboo hat is made from woven bamboo strips and is one of the distinctive features of the women of Laya, the highlands of Bhutan. A pointed spike adorns this small conical bamboo hat and three strands of exquisite beadwork in vibrant hues of white, red, orange, and blue. It remains a treasured ornament for the young women of Laya, reserved for special occasions. Nowadays, hoteliers and traditional handicraft enthusiasts use it as a decorative piece to add a touch of cultural richness to their spaces.The women in Laya, a remote Himalayan community located around 3880 meters above sea level in northwest Bhutan, wear distinctive bamboo hats and robes made of yak hair cloth. It is a muddy, multi-day trek from the closest town. The Layap are a small indigenous group of about 3000 people who were displaced from Tibet to Bhutan in the 1500s.
